Milan Fashion Week is one of the most prestigious events in the fashion industry, and the 2023 edition did not disappoint. The week-long event showcased some of the biggest names in fashion, from established brands to up-and-coming designers, and brought together fashion enthusiasts and industry professionals worldwide. In this post, we'll go over some of the highlights of Milan Fashion Week 2023 and the most important shows during the event.
1. AVAVAV
Models stumbled over each other on the runway at the brand's Spring/Summer 2023 presentation in an effort to make a statement against the "superficiality of fashion." Designer Beate Karlsson looked into the luxury fashion industry's frequently dark appearance for Fall/Winter 2023.
Models' clothes were purposefully torn off of them as they walked in Karlsson's FW23 collection, which explored the rules of luxury and played with the idea of what happens when they are violated. This encouraged viewers to question their own conceptions of luxury. The series, "Fake it till you break it," explores the idea of shame in relation to excellence and workmanship as well as the vulnerability that results from it.
“I’ve been asking myself; why is luxury so serious? Is it because we strive to be perfect? Could bad quality still be luxurious? The last collection was all about keeping up a fake projection of wealth and the personal failure of losing face when this illusion crashes. I’m still on that theme, there’s something exciting about shame and what happens when we are vulnerable. I asked myself; what is the most embarrassing thing that can happen to a fashion house and I figured garments breaking might be it,” Karlsson explained in a press release.

2. Sunnei
The audience was led into a small space with no seating where they stood in anticipation of SUNNEI's most recent release. Models slowly started to make their way down a short runway while rock and roll music was blasting, jumping from the stage to crowd surf over people walking around. The SUNNEI crew of helpers, designers, and managers stole the show with their hilarious and definitely original personalities. The collection urged us to collaborate to forge an experience that was truly remarkable by telling a story of self-assurance, interaction, and freedom.

3. Diesel
The events at the Diesel presentation began with a pile of condoms. Naturally, the setting for creative director Glenn Martens' Fall/Winter 2023 collection ended up being one of the most popular and talked-about setups of the week on Instagram. In keeping with the provocative character of the brand, the Belgian designer presented a seductive, ironic runway of low-low rise jeans and skin-baring apparel that attested to his mastery of denim. Several of the sheer lacy effects were created using the devoré method, which involves burning cellulose fibers with a paste and leaving behind woven cloth in a pattern.

4. Cormio
Teams of teenage female soccer players who had just finished a game watched the models make their way onto the pitch as the up-and-coming label Cormio held their show there. In an abandoned TV studio, up-and-coming designer Marco Rambaldi recreated the renowned 1980s Italian nightclub Cocoric before casting friends of various heights, sizes, and backgrounds as models. Rambaldi is one of the few designers that aims for diversity in his exhibitions.

5. Tomo Koizumi's show, supported by Dolce & Gabbana
Every season, Dolce & Gabbana gives a young designer a stage during the women's exhibitions in Milan. This year, Tomo Koizumi from Japan received their kind surprise, which included all costs. Tomo Koizumi's exhibition, which was shown in the Dolce & Gabbana Casa building on Via Giuseppe Broggi, included enormous dresses, skirts, jumpsuits, and even bags made of cloth that had been delicately ruffled into huge flowers and painted in a rainbow of colors. Koizumi was granted access to the textiles from Dolce & Gabbana as part of the setup. With hyper-ruffled little dresses with a mid-century silhouette, he blasted their recognizable multicolor Carretto print. “It’s not so different from my past collections. I always get inspired by colors in nature. I made a lot of organic shapes. Proper shapes are not interesting for me,” Koizumi said after the show, noting that none of his designs go into commercial production. “I just enjoy making shapes.”
